HumanitZ Rolls Out Major 1.1 Update on PC: NPC Recruitment, Outposts, and Undead Player Corpses

HumanitZ 1.1 Major Spooky Update on PC Steam

Developer Yodubzz Studios and publisher indie.io have officially rolled out the major 1.1 update ("Spooky Update") for their isometric open-world zombie survival game HumanitZ on PC (Steam). Already accompanied by rapid hotfixes 1.1A and 1.1B, this milestone patch significantly expands community management with recruitable NPC survivors, customizable outposts, radio frequency walkie-talkies, and a punishing new mechanic that reanimates your fallen character as an undead threat.

According to the official patch notes published on Steam, solo players can jump straight into the new content without losing their progress, as no new save file is required for single-player games. However, all official multiplayer servers have undergone a complete wipe to accommodate the backend infrastructure changes and world updates.

NPC Survivor Recruitment, Hidden Personality Traits, and Outpost Management

The centerpiece of update 1.1 targets solo and host co-op players. Once you complete the Radio Tower quest, you can recruit NPC survivors encountered across the open world to build a functioning enclave. Recruited companions can be assigned to three core roles: accompanying you directly on combat expeditions, standing guard to defend your camp, or heading out to gather resources autonomously.

To house your growing roster, the patch allows players to establish and upgrade up to two additional outposts and transfer survivors between locations. Still, bringing strangers behind your walls carries genuine risk: Yodubzz Studios has implemented a morale system alongside hidden personality traits. Certain character flaws remain concealed until the recruit has spent several days in your community or hits a specific triggerpoint. Survivors actively voice their needs and grievances, and letting camp morale plummet can trigger catastrophic consequences inside your base. This emphasis on fragile community dynamics echoes the high-stakes enclave management seen in the 19 minutes of State of Decay 3 Lethal Zone gameplay.

Headshot Only Mode and Reanimated Player Zeeks

For survival veterans looking to raise the stakes against the infected hordes, update 1.1 introduces two punishing gameplay mechanics:

  • Headshot Only Mode: Available when starting a new game, loading an existing save, or configuring a dedicated server, this toggle ensures that Zeeks can only be put down permanently by destroying their brain with a precise shot or melee strike to the head.
  • Player Turns Into a Zeek: If your character is mauled to death by zombies or succumbs to infection, your corpse will no longer simply wait on the ground. Instead, your former survivor reanimates as a Zeek and wanders the area carrying all of your gear. To recover your backpack and inventory, you must track down and eliminate your own undead double.

Radio Frequency Walkie-Talkies, New Arsenal, and Halloween Event

Long-range communication and gear variety also receive a major boost with the addition of walkie-talkies. By tuning handheld radios to the same frequency, clan members can communicate across the map using in-game voice chat without relying on external software. In multiplayer, this introduces a tense tactical risk: rival survivors scanning the airwaves can stumble upon your radio frequency, eavesdrop on your plans, and set up an ambush.

On the weapons and loot front, update 1.1 adds the hard-hitting Lever-Action Rifle and the Nail Gun, alongside a new large lootable toolbox and weather-appropriate clothing items including ponchos, balaclavas, and scarves. To celebrate the season, a limited-time Halloween event populates the open world with special quests, themed weapons, cosmetics, and interactive scarecrows.

Finally, Yodubzz Studios quickly followed the main release with hotfixes 1.1A and 1.1B, resolving issues with the map death marker, multi-rider horse mounting on dedicated servers, and vehicle part installation. It marks another strong autumn patch for PC survival fans, arriving right on the heels of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Update 2.1 The Zone Lookout patch.

My Take

Having spent countless hours in isometric zombie survival sandboxes, I love how Yodubzz Studios is leaning into emergent tension with this 1.1 patch. Forcing players to hunt down their own reanimated corpse through an infested town turns a standard corpse run into a nerve-wracking bounty hunt for your own backpack. Even better is the hidden trait system for recruited NPCs: taking in a seemingly helpful survivor only to discover days later during a supply shortage that their concealed personality flaws are tearing your outpost apart is the exact kind of organic storytelling that keeps survival runs memorable.
