From 32-Player Battle Royale to Zelda-Inspired MMO-Lite: Scramble Knights Online Hits Early Access on October 26

After starting life as a 32-player survival arena brawler, Californian independent studio Funktronic Labs has completely reshaped its colorful knight adventure. Following the wave of ID@Xbox Fall 2026 announcements, the developer confirmed that Scramble Knights Online will launch in Early Access on October 26, 2026 for PC (via Steam and the Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S.
Leaving Battle Royale Behind for Co-Op Dungeon Crawling
During its early public playtests, the project was known as Scramble Knights Royale. Back then, 32 players rode turtles onto an island shore, scavenged for gear as a closing ring forced everyone together, and spent the rest of the match wandering around as chickens if they were eliminated.
Following extensive community feedback on Steam and Discord, Funktronic Labs decided to keep the tactile top-down combat and lighthearted chicken humor while rebuilding the core loop into a shared-world MMO-lite Action RPG. Channeling classic top-down The Legend of Zelda adventures like A Link to the Past and Four Swords, the game now focuses on persistent progression and cooperative dungeon diving.
Set across the shared online archipelago of Terracott, players step into the boots of a knight-in-training. You can venture out solo or form a party of up to 4 players online across coastal zones like Greenfield Falls. Expeditions pit your squad against electric slimes, rock-hurling Kurab crabs, puzzle-filled dungeons, and towering bosses such as the greatsword-wielding Void Knight.

The Town Square Hub, Crafting, and Opt-In Faction PvP
Between dungeon runs, progression revolves around the Town Square, a bustling social hub where knights gather around the chicken fountain. Here, players can check the notice board by the Quest Maiden, chat with other adventurers, fish with friends, and group up before heading through the embark gate.
The Town Square is also where you put your hard-earned green gems and crafting materials (wood, leather, cloth) to work. Visiting the Blacksmith, the crafting table, and the Upgrade Knight lets you forge new weapons, reinforce armor sets, and tailor builds to your preferred combat style.

For players who still crave competitive brawls, Funktronic Labs has preserved its PvP roots through optional PvP Factions. By pledging allegiance to a banner like the Red Faction, you can voluntarily flag yourself for chaotic open-world faction warfare without forcing non-PvP players into unwanted ambushes.
Early Access Roadmap: 5 Hours at Launch, 40 Hours by Version 1.0
Alongside a playable demo already live on Steam following the busy October 2026 Steam demo season, Funktronic Labs outlined exactly what players can expect from the Early Access rollout:
- October 26 Launch Scope: The initial Early Access build ships with the complete 1-Star area fully playable, offering roughly 5 hours of unique content alongside an early, replayable version of faction PvP.
- 1.0 Content Target: Planned to remain in Early Access for at least one year, the full 1.0 release will expand up to at least 4-Star tiers of quests and regions. Because each higher tier takes longer to conquer, the studio estimates the 1.0 campaign will deliver around 40 hours of unique content.
- Platform Support and Pricing: Supporting Windows and Linux natively with full controller compatibility, the game will increase in price over time as major content tiers are added.
My Take: The Smartest Pivot Funktronic Labs Could Make
Indie 32-player battle royales face an unforgiving reality: the moment concurrent player counts dip, matchmaking stalls and the entire game suffers. By pivoting Scramble Knights Royale into a 4-player co-op MMO-lite modeled after classic top-down Zelda dungeons, Funktronic Labs has given its charming diorama visuals and punchy combat a real chance to thrive. Even solo or with a couple of friends, exploring Terracott at your own pace makes far more sense than racing a shrinking storm circle.
