Zelda Ocarina of Time Remake Happy Mask Shop Guide: How to Sell All 4 Masks and Unlock the Mask of Truth

The Happy Mask Shop in Hyrule Castle Town Market in Zelda Ocarina of Time Remake on Switch 2

Among the most memorable side quests in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake on Nintendo Switch 2, working as a traveling salesperson for the Happy Mask Shop stands out during Young Link's journey. Long before you tackle the adult Biggoron's Sword trading sequence guide, the proprietor in Hyrule Castle Town Market invites you to peddle four masks across the kingdom. Completing this trading sequence not only unlocks the coveted Mask of Truth and a permanent Deku Nut capacity upgrade, but also fills your wallet to the absolute brim. Here is the complete step-by-step route to sell every mask efficiently.

How to Open the Happy Mask Shop and Borrow Masks

When you first walk into Hyrule Castle Town Market, the colorful storefront of the Happy Mask Shop is locked shut. To trigger its grand opening, you must first sneak into Hyrule Castle Courtyard to meet Princess Zelda and receive Zelda's Letter along with Zelda's Lullaby. Next, travel east to Kakariko Village and show Zelda's Letter to the armored guard blocking the gate to Death Mountain Trail.

After opening the gate for you, the soldier mentions that he wants to buy a popular mask for his son. From that moment on, the Happy Mask Shop opens its doors in the Castle Town Market during daytime hours. The shop operates on a consignment system: you borrow one mask at a time for free, track down the right buyer in Hyrule, and return to pay the shopkeeper's fee to unlock the next mask in line.

  • Unlock requirement: show Zelda's Letter to the Death Mountain Trail gate guard in Kakariko Village.
  • Shop hours: open during the daytime only in Hyrule Castle Town Market.
  • Bunny Hood requirement: collect all 3 Spiritual Stones (complete Inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly).
  • Final rewards: Mask of Truth, 3 bonus masks (Goron, Zora, Gerudo), and the +10 Deku Nut upgrade at the Forest Stage.

Step 1: How to Sell the Keaton Mask in Kakariko Village

Step inside the Happy Mask Shop during the day and borrow the first item on display, the Keaton Mask, which carries a 10 Rupee repayment fee. Exit Castle Town, head straight to Kakariko Village, and climb the northern stairs leading to the Death Mountain Trail gate.

The guard stationed at the Death Mountain Trail gate in Kakariko Village gladly buys the Keaton Mask for 15 Rupees.

Equip the Keaton Mask to a C-button from your inventory before speaking to the guard who inspected Zelda's Letter earlier. Thrilled to have the exact gift his son wanted, he buys it on the spot for 15 Rupees. Return to the Happy Mask Shop in the Market and pay the 10 Rupee fee, leaving you with a tidy 5 Rupee profit and unlocking the second mask.

Step 2: How to Sell the Skull Mask in the Lost Woods

Your second consignment item is the Skull Mask, which requires a 20 Rupee repayment. As a handy bonus while carrying it, wearing the Skull Mask in Hyrule Field prevents Keese bats from swooping down on Link. To find its buyer, travel back to Kokiri Forest and climb into the Lost Woods.

Take the immediate left path upon entering the Lost Woods to find the Skull Kid perched on a tall stump.

In the very first clearing of the Lost Woods, turn left. You will spot a lone Skull Kid standing atop a tree stump. Before selling the mask, hop onto the smaller stump facing him and pull out your ocarina to play Saria's Song to earn a Piece of Heart. Next, put on the Skull Mask, step back onto the stump, and speak to him. He eagerly takes the mask off your hands but only pays 10 Rupees, meaning you will have to cover the remaining 10 Rupees out of pocket when paying the 20 Rupee fee back at the shop.

Step 3: How to Sell the Spooky Mask in Kakariko Graveyard

Once your tab is settled, the shopkeeper hands over the carved wooden Spooky Mask, valued at 30 Rupees. Head back to Kakariko Village and walk all the way east into the Graveyard. Keep in mind that this buyer only appears during the day (play the Sun's Song if you arrive at night).

Wear the Spooky Mask during the daytime in Kakariko Graveyard and talk to the boy marching with a stick.

Inside the graveyard, you will see a young boy patrolling the headstones with a stick, wishing he had a frightening face to complete his Dampé impression. Put on the Spooky Mask and speak to him: he hands over the full 30 Rupees required to pay back the Happy Mask Salesman.

Step 4: How to Sell the Bunny Hood to the Running Man

Unlike the first three masks, the Bunny Hood (priced at 50 Rupees) will not appear on the shop shelf immediately if you rush the side quest early. To unlock the Bunny Hood at the Happy Mask Shop, you must first collect all three Spiritual Stones by completing Inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly.

The Running Man jogs along the circular path surrounding Lon Lon Ranch in Hyrule Field and rests on the ground at night.

Once you borrow the Bunny Hood (which also prevents Stalchildren skeletons from spawning out of the ground at night in Hyrule Field), step out into Hyrule Field to track down the Running Man. He spends the entire day jogging along the dirt path encircling Lon Lon Ranch. Follow him until nightfall, when he finally sits down on the path to catch his breath. Put on the Bunny Hood and talk to him: overjoyed by the long ears, he rewards you by filling your entire Rupee wallet to its maximum capacity! Before talking to him, we strongly recommend following our Adult's and Giant's Wallet Gold Skulltula upgrade guide so you can walk away with 200 or 500 Rupees before paying the 50 Rupee fee back at the Market.

Unlocking the Mask of Truth, Bonus Masks, and Deku Nut Upgrade

After you repay the 50 Rupees for the Bunny Hood, the shopkeeper rewards your hard work by granting free access to the Mask of Truth alongside three bonus novelty masks: the Goron Mask, the Zora Mask, and the Gerudo Mask, part of the timeless design celebrated on the official Nintendo Legend of Zelda hub.

Beyond letting Link read the minds of Gossip Stones across Hyrule for hidden lore and hints, the Mask of Truth unlocks a permanently missable inventory upgrade while you are still Young Link. Head back into the Lost Woods (right, left, right, left, left) and drop into the hidden grotto concealed in the tall grass near the butterflies to enter the Forest Stage. Parading in front of the Deku Scrub audience while wearing the Mask of Truth prompts their leader to award you a permanent Deku Nut capacity upgrade (+10).

My Perspective

Revisiting the Happy Mask Shop route in the Switch 2 remake is a genuine treat, especially since the updated character animations make NPC reactions to each mask twice as expressive. My favorite quality-of-life trick is keeping the Skull Mask or Bunny Hood equipped whenever Young Link crosses Hyrule Field after dark: exploring in peace without endless waves of Stalchildren popping out of the grass makes early-game exploration much smoother.
