No More Download Voucher in a Box: Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 Lands on Switch Game Card Across 3 Limited Run Editions

It took eight full years, but one of the most frustrating retail decisions of the Nintendo Switch era is finally getting fixed in the West. When Capcom originally launched the Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 + 2 retail package in July 2018, North American and European collectors were dismayed to find that only the first compilation was actually on the game card, while the entire second half was reduced to a single-use eShop download voucher inside the case. On November 3, 2026, Limited Run Games and Capcom officially corrected that misstep by unveiling Switch Limited Run #339, putting Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 on a standalone physical Nintendo Switch cartridge alongside a physical return for the first collection.
Fixing the Infamous 2018 Half-Digital Retail Release
Until now, Western collectors who wanted all eight mainline Mega Man X titles on physical Switch media had only one option: importing the Japanese standalone retail edition of Rockman X Anniversary Collection 2. Everywhere else, picking up a pre-owned copy of the retail bundle meant getting stuck with only the first four games, as the pack-in download code for the second collection was almost always redeemed.
Numbered as Switch Limited Run #339 and completely region-free, this new physical run puts the entire second compilation directly onto a Nintendo Switch game card. Open pre-orders will go live on Thursday, November 12, 2026, and remain open until Sunday, January 3, 2027, at 11:59 PM ET.
Standard, Double Pack, and Maverick Hunter Edition: Full Contents and Pricing
Whether you already own the 2018 cartridge for the first half and simply want to replace your paper voucher, or you want the complete eight-game saga in a single display piece, Limited Run Games is offering three physical tiers:
- Standard Edition ($39.99): Tailored for players who already own the first collection on cart, this standalone release includes the physical Nintendo Switch case and full cartridge for Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 (Mega Man X5, X6, X7, and X8).
- Double Pack Edition ($79.99): Bundles both compilations on two separate physical Nintendo Switch cartridges (Mega Man X Legacy Collection featuring X through X4 on the first cart, and Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 featuring X5 through X8 on the second cart), housed inside a custom Combo Game Pak outer slipcase starring X, Zero, and Sigma.
- Maverick Hunter Edition ($139.99): A full collector's set packaged inside a big box styled after an iconic pixel-art Sub-Tank (E-Tank). Alongside both physical Switch games and the Combo Game Pak slipcase, it includes a glowing Hologram Canister Light recreating Dr. Light's upgrade capsule with his pixelated hologram inside, a plush Metool Keychain, and a set of four embroidered patches featuring the Maverick Hunter emblem, Sigma's insignia, and the X and Z logos.
Eight Action Classics, X Challenge Mode, and The Day of Sigma on Cart
Across both cartridges, the compilation spans two distinct console generations of Capcom's fast-paced action platformer: from its 16-bit Super Nintendo roots (Mega Man X, X2, and X3) and 32-bit 2D peak (X4, X5, and X6) to the 3D and 2.5D experiments of the PlayStation 2 era (X7 and X8). Players can dash, wall-jump, and charge up X's arm cannon, slice through Mavericks with Zero's energy saber, or tag in Axl in the later entries, complete with optional CRT scanline filters and Rookie Hunter mode for a more forgiving ride.
Both volumes also feature the two-on-one X Challenge boss rush mode, pitting players against deadly pairs of Mavericks simultaneously with a curated loadout of three special weapons. Rounding out the package is an extensive virtual museum packed with rare production art, vintage toy catalogs, a full music player, and the animated prequel film The Day of Sigma chronicling the origins of the series' main antagonist.
This physical preservation push arrives during a busy stretch for the Blue Bomber's legacy and future alike. Alongside Capcom's latest reveals for Mega Man: Dual Override and its kung fu chef Robot Master Cook Man, the publisher's back catalog has also been making waves after 29 classic NES and Super Nintendo Capcom games were recently rated in South Korea.
My Perspective
Better late than never to bury one of the most annoying half-physical releases of the Switch generation. Cracking open a retail copy of Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 + 2 back in 2018 only to find a paper download slip for half the franchise felt like a slap in the face to anyone who actually cares about game preservation, especially when Japan got two proper cartridges from day one. Having Mega Man X5 through X8 permanently pressed onto a real game card, and ready to pop straight into a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 decades from now without worrying about server shutdowns, makes that glowing Dr. Light capsule box all the sweeter.
