After a 13-Year Wait, Warframe: Tau Opens a New Star Chart in December 2026 With 67th Warframe Brysko

Thirteen years after its initial 2013 launch and with more than 90 million registered players worldwide, Digital Extremes is finally crossing the most legendary frontier in its sci-fi universe. During Devstream 198, hosted by Creative Director Rebecca Ford and Community Director Megan Everett, the Canadian studio unveiled its first in-depth showcase of Warframe: Tau (Update 45). This massive expansion will launch for free in December 2026 across PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms.
With the Lotus temporarily freed from the grip of the Indifference, Tenno will finally chart a course beyond the Origin System into a brand-new binary star system. While the exact calendar launch day will be announced during Devstream 199 on November 27, 2026, Digital Extremes has already kicked off preparations in-game with a one-time community event, Epoch Operation: Taubound, live right now through November 17.
Fornax and Perita: A Rain-Slicked Sentient Crime Ring and a Collapsed Wasteland Moon
While the December 2025 update The Old Peace gave players a glimpse of what Tau once was, Warframe: Tau exposes the harsh reality of what the binary system has become after centuries of war and decay. Two major destinations will anchor the new Star Chart at launch in December:
- The Orbital Ring-City of Fornax: Once a shining Sentient marvel, Fornax has rotted into a lawless urban hellscape overrun by sickness, Bloom addicts, and organized crime under unending waves of madness-inducing black rain. Players will explore the new social hub Manifold 90-BF and fight through dockside thugs and a heavily evolved faction of Sentient enforcers (including Fornax Drowners) to reach the underground casino controlled by the Hunra, a ruthless Sentient kingpin who rules the city's rackets through fear and violence.
- The Desert Moon of Perita: Although Perita initially flourished after the events of The Old Peace, its ecosystem has collapsed into a sandstorm-ravaged wasteland contested by feuding Dazannah clans. Facing total annihilation, Catulast, the young son of the last unconquered clan's chieftain, is forced to seek aid from his ancient enemy, the Tenno. Perita introduces a revamped cooperative Survival mode and a new allied Syndicate of scavengers known as The Cleaving Glaive.
67th Warframe Brysko Voiced by Matthew Mercer and the Portau Card Game
Leading the charge into Fornax's criminal underworld is Brysko, the 67th playable Warframe. Built around a gritty detective noir motif, Brysko serves as the focal point of the new two-to-three-hour single-player cinematic quest focused on the Operator (which requires completing the Prologue to Tau, including The Hex and The Old Peace). In a first for the franchise, Brysko features a running internal monologue voiced by acclaimed actor Matthew Mercer.
In combat, Brysko pioneers a brand-new cosmetic tier called the Chimera Skin and brings a hard-hitting toolkit featuring his loyal Hound companion, signature Rain & Shine fist weapons, and his Exalted magnum, Corecracker. Players will be able to earn Brysko for free through gameplay or unlock him immediately in the in-game Market on launch day.
Mechanically, Update 45 shakes up build crafting with three new physical damage types created by combining a new Tau damage element with Impact, Puncture, and Slash, alongside new endless mission integration with Void Cascade scaling. When Tenno need a break from the black rain, they can pull up a chair at Fornax's casino tables to play Portau, Warframe's first original card game built around four unique suits (Blooms, Cores, Moons, and Suns). Finally, December's release will debut Koumei's femme fatale Deluxe Skin, Koumei Enshoujo, ahead of a newly revealed Nezha Heirloom skin co-designed with Sumo Digital artists Mati Tapia and Stephan Sotelting for early 2027.
My Take
We have been hearing whispers about the Tau system for over a decade in Warframe, stretching all the way back to the earliest Sentient lore drops and The New War. Most live-service publishers would have locked a brand-new solar system behind a $40 paid expansion or chopped it up for a full-priced sequel. Instead, Digital Extremes is dropping an entire binary Star Chart, a rain-soaked Sentient crime metropolis, three new physical damage combinations, and a 67th Warframe voiced by Matthew Mercer completely for free. Seeing Rebecca Ford and her team swing this hard creatively thirteen years into the game's lifecycle without abandoning the Origin System is a masterclass in live-service longevity. Roll on November 27 for the final release date.
