8x 4K Textures, 60 FPS, and Custom Shaders: How the Super Mario Sunshine 4K Community Remaster Transforms Isle Delfino

Super Mario Sunshine 4K at Delfino Plaza with Henriko Magnifico HD texture pack

Since August 13, 2026, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers playing on Nintendo Switch 2 have been able to revisit Super Mario Sunshine through the Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics application. While that official release brings convenient save states and wireless GameCube controller support, it remains a faithful emulation of the 2002 release locked at 30 frames per second. For players who have wanted a full-scale visual overhaul ever since the limited-run Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection on the original Switch, creator Henriko Magnifico has rebuilt his community project Super Mario Sunshine 4K from the ground up with Version 2.0 (currently available as release v2.0c).

Over 280 Hand-Crafted 4K Textures and 8x Internal Scaling

Rather than relying on automated upscaling filters that often flatten the charm of sixth-generation art direction, Henriko Magnifico remade his texture pack from scratch for Version 2.0. The package overhauls hundreds of surfaces across the game, including more than 280 brand-new textures built from the ground up and over 150 environment materials covering cobblestones, stucco facades, wooden piers, sand, and tropical foliage across Isle Delfino. Echoing Shigeru Miyamoto's stance on preserving deliberate human design intention at Nintendo, every replacement texture has been painted to blend seamlessly with the bright coastal aesthetic of the 2002 original.

Under the hood, the 4K edition scales legacy assets to 8x the original GameCube resolution. When paired with increased internal resolution in the Dolphin emulator and the included widescreen hack, individual textures can reach up to 6832 by 3480 pixels. The user interface receives the same meticulous treatment: coin counters, F.L.U.D.D.'s water tank gauge, Shine Sprite icons, character portraits, NPC blinking eye textures, and multiple 4K typefaces have all been redrawn for crisp modern displays. To keep frame pacing smooth on PC when "Prefetch Custom Textures" is enabled, the pack uses BC7 DDS compression, while a 1080p version (4x scaling) and PNG packs are provided for lighter hardware and mobile devices.

Bianco Hills' white stone pathways, mossy cliffs, and F.L.U.D.D.'s HUD elements shine with crisp detail thanks to hand-crafted 4K textures.

Henriko Ultra Shaders, 60 FPS Gameplay, and Super Mario Eclipse Compatibility

Beyond sharper surfaces, Version 2.0 introduces a custom post-processing preset named Henriko Ultra, tailored for Dolphin and Ishiiruka Dolphin. The shader suite adds Screen Space Ambient Occlusion (SSAO) for richer contact shadows around 3D geometry, experimental global illumination, configurable depth of field, custom tone mapping, and sunlight bloom across white stone walls. Just as importantly, the pack disables the original GameCube heat wave distortion filter by default, removing the blurry shimmer that used to obscure distant landmarks across Delfino Plaza.

On the performance side, the download includes a 60 FPS patch enabled by default for the North American (NTSC) version of the game, alongside compatibility with Lossless Scaling for players targeting up to 120 FPS. It supports 16:9 widescreen and 21:9 ultra-widescreen monitors, plus an optional patch that swaps the on-screen GameCube prompts for Nintendo Switch button icons. Much like the wave of community preservation that recently saw classic 3D platformers like Croc celebrated on retro hardware, this texture pack bridges generations across Windows, macOS, Linux and Steam Deck, as well as Android and DolphiniOS. Furthermore, it works alongside major gameplay mods including Super Mario Sunburn and the expansive Super Mario Eclipse overhaul.

As always with legitimate preservation projects, no game ROM or ISO files are bundled with the texture pack: players must legally dump their own GameCube disc to load the enhancements inside Dolphin.

For collectors looking to dump their own original 2002 GameCube disc, live market tracking on the Super Mario Sunshine GameCube price guide on Retrocharting currently places the original NTSC release at $20.23 loose and $33.43 Complete in Box (CIB), while factory-sealed copies reach $350.00 (and up to $914.75 graded).

My Perspective

What has always stayed with me about Super Mario Sunshine is its unmistakable summer warmth and the tactile satisfaction of washing glowing paint off sun-drenched cobblestones. Too many amateur texture packs fall into the trap of cold photorealism, slapping noisy materials onto surfaces that clash with Nintendo's playful geometry. What I love about Henriko Magnifico's Version 2.0 work is its restraint: by clearing away the blurry heat haze and hand-painting the brickwork, tropical wood, and F.L.U.D.D.'s colourful HUD, it lets the original 2002 pastel palette breathe. Gliding across Delfino Plaza in native widescreen at 4K and 60 frames per second without losing an ounce of its artistic soul genuinely feels like the definitive remaster this GameCube classic always deserved.
