Diablo 4 Resurrects Deckard Cain and Reunites All Three Prime Evils for Franchise's 30th Anniversary

Diablo 4 Deckard Cain

"Stay awhile and listen..." That iconic voice line, etched into the collective memories of millions of action-RPG veterans, is echoing once again across the ruined halls of Sanctuary.

During the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard Entertainment delivered one of the most unexpected, nostalgia-packed tributes in its history to mark the 30th anniversary of the franchise. Launching this Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at 5:30 PM UK time, the upcoming seasonal update titled Season of Hell’s Legacy brings back the franchise's most revered Horadrim scholar and pits wanderers against all three original Prime Evils: Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto.

The Spirit of Deckard Cain Returns to Tristram

Tragically slain during the events of Diablo III, the last of the Horadrim is not done defending Sanctuary from cosmic ruin. Manifesting as an echo of his former self, Cain returns to warn wanderers that lingering essences of the Prime Evils have broken loose across ancient battlegrounds.

To confront the resurgence, heroes will journey back to three legendary landmarks faithfully recreated and corrupted: the desecrated catacombs of Tristram Cathedral, the frozen precipices of the Arreat Summit, and the blood-soaked corridors of the Durance of Hate.

All Three Prime Evils Reunited: The Soul Splinter Risk-Reward Engine

Taking down the three Prime Evils is far from a standard nostalgia run. Blizzard has introduced a high-stakes seasonal progression loop centered around Soul Splinters.

Defeating Diablo, Baal, or Mephisto awards a corrupted fragment granting devastating demonic traits. But the pact carries a lethal drawback: wielding a demon's Soul Splinter renders you drastically more vulnerable to that exact Lord of Hell in endgame rifts, forcing players to balance overwhelming burst damage against razor-thin survivability margins.

In tandem, dynamic world events called Waking Nightmares will spontaneously erupt across Sanctuary, dragging players into nightmarish flashbacks replicating iconic boss mechanics from the first two mainline entries.

Permanent Stone of Jordan and the Amazon Class in 2027

On the loot front, the 30th-anniversary celebration permanently injects nine Legacy Uniques into the core drop pool. Leading the pack is the legendary Stone of Jordan, Diablo II's universal currency and build-defining ring, making its triumphant permanent debut in Diablo IV.

Blizzard also used its main stage to reveal the next premium character expansion: the Amazon. Slated for the first half of 2027, the warrior of Skovos wields bows and an entirely new weapon type, the javelin, supported by four distinct specializations: Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger, and Commander.

Simultaneous Launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15

Season of Hell's Legacy goes live globally on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at 5:30 PM BST (12:30 PM EDT), locking in a coordinated rollout alongside the game's handheld debut.

The update arrives day-and-date with Diablo 4: Age of Hatred Collection on Nintendo Switch 2, delivering 60 FPS performance, complete cross-play, and cross-progression. Three decades after our first plunge beneath Tristram, Blizzard proves that the smartest way forward is sometimes looking straight in the rearview mirror. Whether players can harness the power of the Prime Evils without being consumed by it remains to be seen this September 15.
