Over 2 Minutes of Raw Gameplay Leaks from Microsoft's Cancelled Perfect Dark Reboot

The cancellation of the Perfect Dark reboot remains one of the most frustrating chapters in recent Xbox history. While Microsoft officially pulled the plug on the project in summer 2025, over two minutes of previously unseen in-development gameplay have surfaced online.
Discovered within the online portfolio of a VFX artist who worked on the game, and subsequently shared by MP1st and Reddit's r/GamingLeaksAndRumours community, the clips provide a rare look behind the closed doors of The Initiative.
Parkour Traversal, Tactical Gadgets, and Physics Destruction
The footage strings together multiple internal playtests, ranging from early greybox geometry tests to polished urban sandbox environments. Joanna Dark is shown navigating futuristic cityscapes with parkour traversal that heavily echoes Mirror's Edge, chaining wall-runs, sliding beneath obstacles, and infiltrating facilities through ventilation shafts.
Joanna's movement displays noticeable physical momentum, featuring realistic camera bobbing, ledge-mantling, and heavy landings that gave traversal a tactile, physical punch. Spy enthusiasts will spot sequences highlighting espionage gadgets, including an augmented reality scanner built into her visor to map security weaknesses and patrol paths.
Beyond vertical movement, the leak highlights brutal close-quarters takedowns, suppressed sidearm engagements, and experimental destruction physics on market stalls and street props. The prototype showcases a spy shooter that clearly aimed for emergent, physical interactivity before production stalled.
Take-Two's Collapsed Rescue Deal and Xbox Studio Cuts
First unveiled at The Game Awards 2020 as Xbox's flagship "AAAA" showcase, The Initiative spent years navigating leadership turnover and tech pivots. Built by Darrell Gallagher in 2018 with top-tier talent from Naughty Dog, Respawn, and Crystal Dynamics, the team struggled with internal vision clashes and a challenging shift to Unreal Engine 5.
Reporting from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier previously detailed how Take-Two Interactive entered talks with Microsoft and Embracer to co-fund and rescue the game. Those negotiations eventually collapsed over long-term franchise ownership, sealing the fate of both Perfect Dark and The Initiative alongside wider studio closures and restructuring across Xbox.
These two minutes of raw archive footage will not bring Joanna Dark back to Xbox Series X, but they offer undeniable proof of what The Initiative was building before corporate belt-tightening closed the book on the revival.
