Screen Freezes Mid-Match and Locked Ghost Hat: Why Nintendo Abruptly Canceled the Kirby Air Riders Halloween Event

Cosmetic hunters hoping to spend their Halloween weekend tearing across Skyah will have to park their machines back in the paddock. Just forty-eight hours after kicking off the limited-time Trick or Treat! event in Kirby Air Riders on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has pulled the plug on the seasonal celebration. The culprit is a severe performance bug that caused screens to repeatedly freeze right in the middle of frantic online matches.
Mid-Match Freezes Bring City Trial Chaos to a Halt
Originally scheduled to run from October 28 through November 4, 2026, the Trick or Treat! event gave the fan-favorite City Trial mode a festive Halloween makeover. Players dropped into a spooky variation of the Skyah arena featuring modified item-drop mechanics when attacking rivals, boosted machines such as the Vampire Star, and an event point ladder packed with seasonal unlocks.
Almost immediately after the queue went live, players began documenting severe technical hiccups across social media, including gameplay clips shared on Bluesky by creator TAHK0. During heated 16-player skirmishes, the entire screen would abruptly lock up for a second or two before snapping back to live action. In a game directed by Masahiro Sakurai where machines accelerate automatically and every drift or boost charge relies on split-second timing, even a brief freeze can wreck an entire run.
What made the bug especially punishing was its tendency to strike near the end of the five-minute City Trial timer, right before players transition into the final Stadium showdown. Because getting knocked out or battered in the final seconds causes racers to drop hard-earned stat patches, freezing in front of an aggressive rival often meant losing a winning build right before the finish line.
Nintendo's Official Apology and the Fate of the Ghost Hat
With no immediate hotfix ready to deploy ahead of Halloween weekend, Nintendo opted to shut down the event entirely rather than leave a broken queue online. In an official statement issued on Friday, October 30 via Nintendo's Japanese customer support channels, the publisher confirmed the sudden cancellation:
"We have confirmed an issue in the currently ongoing event 'Trick or Treat!' where the screen temporarily freezes during gameplay. For this reason, we will be cancelling this event. We apologize to everyone who was looking forward to playing."

The abrupt shutdown leaves many players just short of the mid-tier point threshold required to unlock the event's signature prize: the spooky Ghost headwear. This sheet-style ghost hat lets riders including Kirby, Susie, Magolor, Starman, and Daroach dress up for Halloween inside the paddock and during matches, alongside themed stickers and license plate cosmetics.
Thankfully, completionists will not be locked out of the reward forever. Nintendo confirmed that teams at Sora Ltd. and Bandai Namco Studios plan to reschedule and rerun the Trick or Treat! event at a later date once the underlying freezing issue has been resolved, allowing everyone another shot at the Ghost Hat.

A Rare Technical Stumble on Nintendo Switch 2
Pulling a live first-party event mid-run is an unusual move for Nintendo, especially given how smoothly the racer has performed since hitting the game release calendar on November 20, 2025. Throughout spring and summer 2026, the game's Version 1.3.x update cycle steadily expanded the package with Grand Prix paddock series, GameShare compatibility, Sub-In Series rulesets, and support for new Meta Knight, King Dedede, and Chef Kawasaki amiibo figures.
Previous limited-time online gatherings such as Everyone, to the Stadium! and Team Battle Tussle! ran without widespread hitching. That points directly toward the Halloween ruleset's custom Skyah modifiers and heavy item-drop bursts during multi-rider collisions as the likely trigger behind the network and frame stalls.
My Perspective
Knowing how obsessive Masahiro Sakurai is about frame-perfect responsiveness, watching a 16-player City Trial lobby turn into a slideshow for two full seconds felt surreal. I jumped into a few matches on Wednesday night specifically to grind out the Ghost headwear, and the tension was palpable for all the wrong reasons. Having your screen lock up with thirty seconds left on the clock, only to unfreeze and see half your Top Speed and Offense patches scattered across Skyah because a rival slammed into you, is enough to make anyone grip their Joy-Con 2 a little too hard. Losing the Halloween event right before October 31 stings, but pulling the queue until it runs properly was the right call. I will happily rock that ridiculous ghost sheet in the middle of November once the fix lands.
