Xbox Mythic Achievements Roll Out on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One: Xbox 360 Retroactive Unlocks, DLC Protection, and All 10 October Update Features

Official Xbox Mythic Achievement unlocked pop-up notification in Gears of War: E-Day on Xbox Series X|S

Following a month-long preview test with Xbox Insiders, Microsoft has officially begun rolling out the October 2026 system update (version 10.0.26100.9647) to all Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles. Headlining the release is the public arrival of Mythic Achievements, giving completionists Xbox's long-awaited answer to PlayStation's Platinum Trophy across the entire console ecosystem.

100% Base-Game Completion, Permanent DLC Protection, and Retroactive Xbox 360 Unlocks

For over two decades since the birth of Gamerscore in 2005, Xbox completionists have faced a recurring frustration: watching a hard-earned 100% completion rate vanish the moment a studio drops a paid expansion. As detailed by Xbox engineering leads Alex Charters and Eden Marie on Xbox Wire, Mythic Achievements solve that problem through three core rules:

  • Original Base List Only: You unlock a Mythic Achievement the moment you complete every original achievement included in a game's base list.
  • Clear "Add-On" Segregation: Achievements added post-launch via downloadable content (DLC) or title updates are explicitly tagged as "add-on" and are never required to earn Mythic status.
  • Yours to Keep Forever: Once you earn a Mythic Achievement for a game, that status is permanent. Even if developers add dozens of new expansion achievements months or years down the line, you will never lose your Mythic crown.

Better yet, the entire system works retroactively. As soon as your console installs the October update, Xbox automatically scans your full Gamertag history and awards Mythic status to every eligible title you completed in the past, stretching all the way back to backward-compatible Xbox 360 classics finished fifteen years ago. This rollout builds directly on Microsoft's broader preservation push just days after original Xbox classics like Morrowind, Black, and Ninja Gaiden Black gained dedicated achievement trackers on Xbox Series X|S.

The New Profile Gaming Tab, Heroic Frames, and Gamerscore Milestone Badges

To make sure your full-game completions stand out rather than getting buried beneath thousands of standard unlocks, Microsoft has redesigned the console profile layout. Your Xbox profile now features a dedicated Gaming tab that brings together your overall achievement history, your total Mythic Achievements counter, your completed games catalog, and a live countdown toward your next Gamerscore milestone badge.

The new Gaming tab centralizes your Mythic Achievements count, Gamerscore milestone progress, and highlights 100% completed games with a laurel-crowned heroic frame.

Both in your own achievement history and when browsing friends' Gaming tabs, every title that has reached Mythic status is highlighted with a distinctive heroic frame featuring a four-pointed star and laurel wreath that dynamically adapts to your profile theme color. At the top of each game's individual achievement list, a new progress bar tracks how close you are to reaching Mythic status, complete with a filter to focus strictly on remaining base-game objectives.

1440p Remote Play, Custom Startup Animations, and Local Save Management

Alongside Mythic Achievements, the October 28 console update packs nine additional quality-of-life upgrades for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One players (available to download immediately under Settings > System > Updates):

  • Customizable Startup Animations: By heading to Settings > System > Startup, you can now choose which boot-up animation plays when powering on your console, with historical sequences spanning from the Xbox One era up through the current generation, alongside the toggle to mute startup audio.
  • 1440p Xbox Remote Play: Streaming games from your Xbox Series X|S console to supported devices now supports up to 1440p resolution and higher video bitrates for noticeably sharper image quality.
  • Immersive Background Mode via Right Thumbstick (R3): Pressing the right thumbstick button anywhere on the Home dashboard now fades away the entire UI so your dynamic or custom background can take center stage. You can also press the Menu button to remove individual tiles from your recent games and apps list, including the Play History tile.
  • Granular Local Game Save Controls: Players can now view, sort by size, and delete unused local game saves individually or all at once to free up internal storage without touching cloud-synced backups.
  • Local Search & High-Res Badge Stories: A new local search bar lets you quickly filter large libraries inside "My games & apps" and achievement lists, while profile badges can now be inspected in high resolution with full unlock dates and descriptions, complementing the all-time Xbox Playback dashboard launched for the brand's 25th anniversary.

My Perspective: The Completionist Crown Our Gamertags Needed Twenty Years Ago

It took twenty-one years after the Xbox 360 invented modern console achievements for Microsoft to finally fix its most glaring blind spot. Watching a spotless 1000/1000 Gamerscore drop to 78% overnight just because a publisher released a paid expansion pack has been a constant sore spot for completionists. By walling off the base achievement list and making Mythic status permanent, Xbox finally matches the satisfaction of PlayStation's Platinum Trophy.

What makes this October rollout truly special is how effortlessly it honors your history. Booting up your console after the update and seeing dozens of laurel-crowned heroic frames already waiting in your Gaming tab for Xbox 360 campaigns you conquered fifteen years ago feels genuinely rewarding. Paired with 1440p Remote Play, custom boot animations, and proper local save cleanup, this is easily the most thoughtful console dashboard update Xbox has delivered in years.
