PlayStation Plus Deluxe Members in South Korea Get a Free Upgrade to Premium as 4K PS5 Cloud Streaming Launches October 28

PlayStation Plus Premium PS5 Cloud Streaming and PlayStation Portal in South Korea

When Sony Interactive Entertainment overhauled its subscription service in June 2022, it introduced the PlayStation Plus Deluxe tier specifically for markets where local cloud gaming infrastructure was not yet available. That regional gap is now closing in South Korea: in an official announcement published on the PlayStation.Blog by Nick Maguire, Vice President of Global Services at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company confirmed that PS5 Cloud Streaming will officially launch in South Korea on October 28, 2026, while automatically upgrading all active Deluxe subscribers to PlayStation Plus Premium at no additional cost.

From Deluxe to Premium: An Automatic Upgrade With Zero Price Increase

Effective October 21, 2026, the PlayStation Plus Deluxe plan has officially been replaced by PlayStation Plus Premium across the South Korean store. Unlike promotional PlayStation Plus tier upgrades that revert to higher renewal rates once a discount period ends, this transition permanently elevates the tier at the existing Deluxe price point of 171,000 KRW per year (roughly $125 USD).

Until now, South Korean subscribers on the top tier received the Game Catalog, Classic Catalog downloads, and limited-time Game Trials, but lacked any cloud streaming functionality. To celebrate the launch, Sony is also offering South Korean players a free bundle of ten Black Desert PSN avatars via voucher code ECA8-T7NA-FEMF, redeemable through March 31, 2027.

Up to 4K at 60Hz on PS5 and Console-Free Streaming on PlayStation Portal

Starting October 28, 2026, PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers in South Korea will be able to stream supported PS5 games directly from Sony's cloud servers on both PS5 consoles and the PlayStation Portal remote player without downloading installation files. On PS5 consoles, cloud streaming supports resolutions up to 2160p (4K) at 60Hz with both SDR and HDR output, full DLC compatibility, and automatic save and trophy synchronization via PlayStation Plus cloud storage.

Sony has outlined the recommended minimum internet bandwidth thresholds for each target resolution:

  • 2160p (4K) on PS5: 39 Mbps or higher
  • 1440p on PS5: 23 Mbps or higher
  • 1080p (Full HD) on PS5 and PlayStation Portal: 13 Mbps or higher
  • 720p (HD): 7 Mbps or higher (with a baseline connection requirement of 5 Mbps)

For PlayStation Portal owners in the region, the update unlocks standalone cloud gaming at up to 1080p and 60 frames per second over high-speed Wi-Fi. Rather than relying solely on Remote Play linked to a home console, Premium members can stream compatible PS5 titles directly from Sony's servers even while their PS5 is powered off, being used by another household member, or without owning a PS5 console at all.

Over 300 Catalog Titles and Owned Digital Games, Restricted Exclusively to PS5 Architecture

At launch, over 300 PS5 titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog will support cloud streaming in South Korea, including major releases such as Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy XVI, and Hogwarts Legacy, alongside eligible Monthly Games previously claimed by subscribers. In addition, thousands of digital PS5 games owned in a player's personal library can be streamed without installation, with Sony highlighting Ghost of Yotei, Crimson Desert, Grand Theft Auto V, Zenless Zone Zero, and eFootball.

However, Sony's FAQ reveals one major architectural difference compared to North America, Europe, and Japan: South Korea's cloud streaming service only supports digital PS5 games. Legacy PS3 streaming, PS4 cloud streaming, PS VR2 titles, and physical disc-based games are excluded from the local rollout.

My Take: PS5-Only Server Blades Are Sony's Blueprint for Global Deluxe Markets

Launching cloud streaming in South Korea with strictly PS5 server instances tells us a lot about how Sony plans to expand PlayStation Plus Premium into remaining Deluxe territories across Asia, Latin America, and Oceania. Maintaining legacy PS3 Cell hardware and separate PS4 server racks in brand-new regional data centers is prohibitively expensive and difficult to scale. By deploying standardized PS5-only cloud blades, Sony can bring its highest-value feature, instant 4K console streaming and standalone PlayStation Portal play,to new regions without inflating subscription prices. Even better for players, Sony continues to offer unlimited cloud streaming sessions with no hourly caps at the exact moment Microsoft is testing monthly cloud playtime limits with Xbox Insiders.
