Celtic Folklore, ARC Crystals, and NieR: Automata Vocals: Pixel JRPG Forge of the Fae Targets March 2027
After championing acclaimed indie RPG standouts like CrossCode and Chained Echoes, publishing label Deck13 Spotlight and independent developer Datadyne LLC have officially locked in the launch window for their next nostalgic jewel. Alongside a brand-new official release window trailer showcasing atmospheric exploration and turn-based tactical combat, Forge of the Fae is now scheduled to launch in March 2027 for PC (via Steam and GOG), PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Crafted as a love letter to 16-bit and 32-bit era classics while integrating modern lighting and fluid combat mechanics, the game transports players to a mystical world inspired by 1800s Ireland and ancient Celtic folklore. Following a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter that surpassed $200,000 and a recent transition into Alpha status covering roughly one-third of the full adventure, Datadyne’s ambitious project is rapidly becoming a centerpiece of the 2027 video game release calendar.

19th-Century Irish Unrest Meets Awakening Fae Mythology
Rather than relying on generic high-fantasy tropes, Forge of the Fae grounds its opening chapters in a tense social and industrial conflict. Players step into the boots of Fiora, a brilliant young inventor accompanied by her loyal Mechanical Faerie (affectionately nicknamed “Bug”). When a local miners’ strike spirals into open violence and the powerful Mining Company hires armed mercenaries to crush the unrest, townsfolk begin vanishing one by one under mysterious circumstances.
As Fiora investigates the disappearances, she uncovers an ancient slumbering power that has reignited hostilities between humankind and the enigmatic Fae. Developer Datadyne LLC emphasizes branching narrative choices where Fiora’s decisions carry tangible weight, shaping her relationships with party members and steering the ultimate fate of the conflict. Beyond combat, upgrading Fiora’s Mechanical Faerie allows players to manipulate environmental mechanisms, solve intricate spatial puzzles, and uncover hidden lore tucked away across the world.

ARC Crystal Customization, Adrenaline Surges, and Legendary Musical Guests
On the battlefield, Forge of the Fae draws clear inspiration from Chrono Trigger, Octopath Traveler, and Sea of Stars, delivering brisk turn-based encounters built around deep system synergy:
- The ARC Crystal System: A flexible customization grid that lets players align active skills, passive traits, and elemental magic (fire, wind, water, earth, nature, and arcane) to tailor each character’s combat role.
- Combo Abilities: A synergy mechanic where pairing specific physical skills with spells unlocks devastating new effects and exploits enemy vulnerabilities.
- Adrenaline Surges: Tactical burst abilities that can be triggered mid-fight without consuming a character’s standard turn, adding crucial momentum shifts during boss encounters.
Elevating its rain-swept Celtic landscapes is an extraordinary musical collaboration. Veteran composer Yoshino Aoki (renowned for Breath of Fire III, Breath of Fire IV, Mega Man Battle Network, and Final Fantasy XV) and iconic vocalist Emi Evans (the haunting voice behind NieR: Automata and Drakengard 3) are both contributing to the game’s original soundtrack.
Playable Free Steam Demo Available Right Now

Players eager to test the ARC Crystal System and Fiora’s gadgetry ahead of launch can download a free playable demo on Steam right now, complete with full controller support.

My Take: Where Pixel-Art Craftsmanship Meets Celtic Soul
I have to admit that from the very first notes carried by Emi Evans’ ethereal vocals and Yoshino Aoki’s melodic arrangements, Forge of the Fae immediately captured my heart. What resonates with me most about Datadyne’s vision is its refusal to settle for surface-level nostalgia. By setting Fiora’s journey against the backdrop of 19th-century Irish industrial strife and a violent miners’ strike, the story carries a grounded emotional gravity that makes the awakening Fae folklore feel genuinely mysterious. Pair that narrative ambition with rain-soaked dynamic lighting and the tactical freedom of the ARC Crystal System, and it is easy to see why Deck13 Spotlight signed this gem alongside Chained Echoes.
