Roblox Games Escape the Platform: Creators Can Soon Export Standalone Apps for PC, Consoles, and Mobile

A massive economic earthquake just struck the independent game development landscape. During its annual Roblox Developers Conference (RDC), leadership announced a historic strategic pivot: developers will soon be able to compile and export their projects as standalone applications for PC, consoles, and mobile devices.
Until now, building an experience on the Roblox engine required total ecosystem lock-in. Games could only run inside the proprietary Roblox client, forcing studios to accept steep platform revenue cuts that often swallowed up to 70% of gross in-game purchases.
Breaking Out of the Sandbox
This upcoming capability allows development teams trained on Roblox Studio to generate independent executables. In practical terms, creators can package their games and distribute them directly via Steam, the Epic Games Store, the PlayStation Store, Xbox, iOS, and Android without requiring end players to ever launch or install the core Roblox app.
For the wider games industry, this represents a monumental shift. Major experiences born within the platform—such as Dress to Impress, Blox Fruits, and Blade Ball—command tens of millions of active monthly users. By granting them the freedom to publish directly to traditional storefronts, Roblox is actively challenging Unity and Unreal Engine in the mid-tier and indie developer space.
"Enabling standalone exports acknowledges that top Roblox creators are no longer hobbyists tinkering with toys—they are full-fledged game studios ready to compete on Steam."
The Economics of Independence
The crucial question for industry veterans revolves around revenue sharing. While off-platform standalone games bypass the internal Robux monetization funnel, Roblox plans to maintain an engine licensing royalty structure similar to Epic Games' standard 5% fee after initial revenue thresholds.
For aspiring game developers, the barrier to commercial entry has never been lower. Learning production fundamentals within a collaborative, highly accessible toolset is no longer a walled-garden compromise, but a viable runway toward launching commercial titles across global platforms.
A New Wave of Indie Studios
While Roblox risks decentralizing some of its most lucrative properties, this transition signals a maturation of modern game design. A generation of developers raised on rapid prototyping and relentless live-service iteration is about to bring its design philosophies straight to the front page of Steam.
