15 16-Bit Levels, Original Keanu Reeves Voice Clips, and Couch Co-Op: Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure: Arcade Announced for PS5, Switch, Xbox, and PC

Thirty-seven years after San Dimas' most famous time-traveling slackers first hit theaters, the iconic phone booth is officially touching down on modern hardware. Developer Art of Play Interactive and publisher Roditeli Productions have announced Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure: Arcade for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via its official Steam store page. Built from the ground up as the authentic 16-bit coin-op brawler the 1989 cult classic never got back in the day, the project blends side-scrolling action, historical mini-games, and two-player local co-op.
A 15-Level Time-Traveling Campaign With Two-Player Couch Co-Op
Staying faithful to the plot of the 1989 motion picture starring a young Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, the game puts the two aspiring rockers of Wyld Stallyns up against the ultimate academic deadline: ace their San Dimas High School history presentation or watch the future unravel. Stepping into the sneakers of either Bill S. Preston Esq. or Ted "Theodore" Logan, players battle across a 15-level campaign brought to life with hand-crafted 16-bit pixel art, playable solo or alongside a friend in two-player local couch co-op (with Steam Remote Play Together also supported on PC).
Arriving right as players embrace 90s-inspired arcade brawlers like Takeover 2 on Steam, the campaign mixes fast-paced side-scrolling combat with era-hopping exploration. Clearing the main Story Mode also unlocks a dedicated Arcade Mode alongside standalone access to all unlockable mini-games and extras.

Socrates, Napoleon, Beethoven, and Authentic 1989 Movie Voice Clips
Core progression revolves around tracking down legendary figures from across history and bringing them back to San Dimas in time for the final report. Throughout their journey, Bill and Ted track down and face off against Billy the Kid, Socrates, Napoleon Bonaparte, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Genghis Khan. Encountering each historical icon triggers a custom head-to-head mini-game that players must win to recruit them into the phone booth as allies for the rest of the quest.
To capture the unmistakable late-80s energy of the film, Art of Play Interactive has paired a high-energy 80s rock soundtrack with authentic audio and voice clips pulled directly from the 1989 movie. Signature lines delivered by Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, and the late George Carlin (as their time-traveling guide Rufus) play right amidst the pixel-art chaos outside the iconic Circle K convenience store.
BackerKit Crowdfunding Campaign and Limited Physical PS5 & Switch Editions
While the digital storefronts currently list the release window as "Coming soon," Art of Play Interactive has confirmed a BackerKit crowdfunding campaign launching in February 2027 to support the final stretch of development. Fans who enjoy collecting classic arcade revivals arriving on PS5 and modern consoles will be able to back the project for limited physical editions on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, alongside retro SNES-style collector boxes and exclusive merchandise.
My Perspective
What immediately wins me over about Art of Play Interactive's approach is how affectionately it leans into the goofy charm of the 1989 film rather than settling for a generic reskin. Watching Socrates and Billy the Kid literally crammed inside the pixel-art phone booth outside the Circle K while authentic voice clips from Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, and George Carlin play over 80s guitar riffs feels like the exact 16-bit cabinet we always wished existed in the 90s. With fifteen levels of couch co-op and dedicated mini-game showdowns against Napoleon and Beethoven, this looks like an easy crowd-pleaser for retro action fans on PS5 and Switch.
