Stardew Valley 1.7 Targets 2027 as ConcernedApe Teases the Largest Update in the Game's History

Ten years after its original debut, Stardew Valley still refuses to put down the watering can. During the grand finale of the official Stardew Valley: Symphony of Seasons concert tour at Colorado's iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, creator Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone made a surprise appearance on stage to play the steel drums alongside the orchestra before sharing a massive reveal with the crowd: Update 1.7 is shaping up to be the largest update in the game's history, with a release tentatively targeted for 2027.
Surpassing Updates 1.5 and 1.6 in Scope
While versions 1.5 (which introduced Ginger Island) and 1.6 (which added the Meadowlands Farm, the Mastery system, and major seasonal festivals) already set the gold standard for free post-launch indie support, Barone confirmed on stage that this upcoming patch goes even further: "We're working on the 1.7 update, which is looking to be the largest Stardew Valley update ever."
Addressing when players will finally get their hands on the patch, Barone noted that version 1.7 will "probably come out sometime next year," placing the massive free expansion squarely on the 2027 video game release calendar while giving his team plenty of breathing room to polish its systems without crunch.
Clint and Sandy Marriage Routes, a New Farm Type, and Livelier Children
Back in February during his ten-year anniversary retrospective video, ConcernedApe shared the first concrete details about patch 1.7, confirming that players will finally be able to romance and marry two long-requested characters: Clint, Pelican Town's famously awkward blacksmith, and Sandy, the enigmatic shopkeeper running The Oasis out in the Calico Desert.
Speaking to fans at Red Rocks, however, Barone stressed that those reveals barely scratch the surface of what is actually in store: "It's jam-packed. Clint and Sandy are just the tip of the iceberg; there's so much more in the update." Beyond the two new marriage candidates, confirmed features for Update 1.7 currently include:
- A brand-new farm layout designed to shake up fresh playthroughs from day one;
- Expanded social and family mechanics, including a long-awaited push to make in-game children more interactive and expressive as they grow;
- Under-the-hood improvements and tooling upgrades built specifically to support the modding community.
What About Haunted Chocolatier?
Whenever a massive new patch is announced for Pelican Town, fans naturally wonder what it means for Haunted Chocolatier, Barone's standalone action-RPG and confectionary simulator first unveiled in 2021. Unlike the early days when he coded every single pixel and musical note alone, ConcernedApe now works with a small dedicated team on Stardew Valley updates while overseeing creative direction.
That structure allows development on Haunted Chocolatier, which leans much heavier into combat, boss encounters, and dungeon exploration inspired by the mines of Stardew, to continue moving forward in parallel. Between this upcoming 1.7 overhaul and Coral Island hitting Nintendo Switch 2 alongside Update 1.4, farming sim fans have a remarkably stacked schedule ahead.
My Perspective
There is something genuinely extraordinary about Eric Barone's relationship with his community. In an industry where most publishers charge fifteen dollars for a cosmetic furniture pack or a three-hour side quest, watching a developer walk out onto the stage at Red Rocks ten years after launch to promise the biggest free update in his game's history is almost surreal. Giving Sandy a full romance arc finally gives us a heartfelt reason to take the bus out to the Calico Desert beyond Skull Cavern runs, and I have a morbid fascination with seeing how Barone's writing manages to redeem Clint without making the whole courtship painfully awkward. If version 1.7 also succeeds in turning our farmhouse children into actual characters rather than silent little ghosts sprinting into bedroom walls, my 400-hour save file is officially in danger all over again in 2027.
