PlayStation China Hero Project: After Phantom Blade Zero's 4 Million Sales, Sony Injects $1 Million Per PS5 Game

PlayStation's long-term bet on Chinese game development is shifting into a higher gear. During a press conference held in Shanghai on November 3, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced a major wave of fresh funding for its PlayStation China Hero Project incubator, which has now entered its fourth phase. Riding the commercial momentum of its Asian catalog, the console maker is injecting an additional $1 million USD per game into several standout titles in development for PS5 and PC.
Riding the Wave of Phantom Blade Zero's 4 Million Sales
This renewed financial commitment comes right on the heels of the global breakout success of Phantom Blade Zero and its intense martial arts boss encounters, which has already surpassed four million copies sold worldwide across PS5 and PC. While PC players accounted for a massive share of those sales, the console exclusivity secured by Sony proved just how lucrative backing ambitious Chinese studios early in their lifecycle can be.
As reported directly from the Shanghai conference by Shenzhen-based games industry analyst Daniel Camilo, Sony Interactive Entertainment is granting an extra $1 million USD in development funds to multiple promising projects selected for Phase 4, while also extending the same million-dollar boost to select titles from earlier waves of the program.
DaBa: Land of Water Scar and EXILEDGE Target 2027 Releases
Leading the charge among the newly funded projects is DaBa: Land of Water Scar, crafted by developer Dark Star. This dark fantasy Souls-like action-RPG puts players in control of a humanoid clay puppet navigating a crumbling world on the brink of apocalypse. Set amidst the haunting ruins of the ancient Tibetan city of Guge, the game blends precision swordplay with intricate level design. Backed by Sony's expanded investment, the studio is now targeting a Spring 2027 launch window on PS5 and PC.

Following closely behind on the release slate is EXILEDGE, built by Enigmatrix on Unreal Engine 5. This fast-paced third-person sci-fi action shooter drops players onto an apocalyptic planet swallowed by a toxic red fog, combining slick visual fidelity with high-mobility gunplay. Its launch is scheduled for later in the 2027 video game release calendar, arriving after DaBa: Land of Water Scar hits store shelves.
Unending Dawn and Returning Incubator Projects Receive Fresh Backing
Sony is also doubling down on standout titles introduced in previous phases of the incubator. Developed by Parcae's Fate Studio, the anime-styled open-world action-RPG Unending Dawn is likewise receiving an additional $1 million investment to polish its combat systems and open-world performance for PS5. Meanwhile, other China Hero Project entries such as Loulan: The Cursed Sand and The God Slayer remain in active development under Sony's umbrella.
Beyond the direct $1 million capital injection per title, the PlayStation China Hero Project provides participating teams with hands-on PS5 hardware optimization, quality assurance testing, global marketing campaigns, and international publishing support. By stepping in at key production milestones, Sony ensures PS5 remains the primary console destination for the new wave of blockbuster Chinese action games alongside PC.
My Perspective
An extra $1 million per game might look modest compared to bloated Western AAA budgets, but for mid-sized Chinese studios entering the final stretch of development, that targeted capital goes a remarkably long way. I think Sony's playbook here is spot-on: instead of spending billions on risky studio acquisitions, PlayStation is securing console priority on visually striking action titles like DaBa: Land of Water Scar and EXILEDGE while giving these talented teams the technical polish they need to compete globally in 2027.
