Twenty-eight years after defining the blueprint for first-person stealth on PC, master thief Garrett is stepping back into the shadows of The City. Publisher Atari and developer Nightdive Studios, in partnership with Eidos-Montréal and Eidos Interactive, have officially announced that Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will launch on December 3, 2026 across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store).

The Tarnished Mirror: A Brand-New Official Campaign From the Creators of The Black Parade

Rather than settling for a basic resolution bump, Nightdive Studios is expanding Looking Glass Studios' 1998 masterpiece with substantial narrative content. Alongside the original 12 sprawling missions of Thief: The Dark Project and the complete 1999 Thief Gold upgrade (which added three expansive levels and five new enemy types), this remaster introduces an all-new official expansion titled The Tarnished Mirror.

Built by the acclaimed modding team behind Thief: The Black Parade, The Tarnished Mirror is an original four-mission campaign set immediately after the Trickster's defeat at the end of the original game. Left shortchanged while The City reels from political and ideological upheaval, Garrett returns to small-time jobs to scrape by,until a seemingly routine heist for a Precursor hand-mirror pulls him into a much darker conspiracy that bridges the gap toward Thief II: The Metal Age.

KEX Engine Overhaul, 4K at 120 FPS, and Looking Glass Studios Vault

Rebuilt on Nightdive's proprietary KEX Engine, Thief: The Dark Project Remastered runs at up to 4K resolution and 120 frames per second. Character models, environmental textures, animations, and minor level-design quirks have been carefully restored while preserving the unscripted, systemic sound propagation and light-and-shadow mechanics that made the original "first-person sneaker" a genre-defining landmark.

To make Garrett's long-awaited debut on modern consoles feel seamless, Nightdive has introduced several quality-of-life upgrades:

  • Weapon and Item Wheel: Quickly cycle through Garrett's blackjack, sword, lockpicks, and specialized elemental arrows (water arrows to douse torches, moss arrows to deaden footsteps on stone and metal, rope arrows, and noisemakers).
  • Modern Controller Features: Full gamepad support with rumble feedback, gyro/motion aiming, Trophies and Achievements, and a dedicated mission selector to replay completed chapters across all three objective-altering difficulty tiers.
  • The Vault & Custom Campaign Support: A behind-the-scenes archive packed with production art and development history from Looking Glass Studios, paired with built-in support for community-made custom campaigns.

Pricing, Editions, and Pre-Order Details

Pre-orders are live today ahead of the game's arrival on the December 2026 game release calendar. Players can choose between two digital editions:

  • Standard Edition ($29.99 / £24.99 / €29.99): Includes the full remastered game, all Thief Gold content, and the new The Tarnished Mirror campaign.
  • Digital Deluxe Edition ($34.99 / £28.99 / €34.99): Adds a digital remaster art diary, the official soundtrack, and a novel preview of Thief: The Dark Project.

Physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 are also available for pre-order through distributor Clear River Games.

My Take

Anyone who booted up Thief: The Dark Project on PC back in late 1998 remembers the exact moment the rules of first-person gaming changed forever. At a time when every shooter trained you to kick down doors with a shotgun, Looking Glass Studios made you terrified of a single torchlight and the echo of your own boots on marble tile. Watching the Light Gem dim at the bottom of the screen, leaning against a heavy oak door to listen to a Hammerite guard's patrol route, and sniping a chandelier flame with a water arrow from thirty yards away still puts 90% of modern stealth games, with their neon vision cones and X-ray wallhacks,to absolute shame.

Having Nightdive Studios bring this monument to 4K and 120 FPS on the KEX Engine is already a massive win for game preservation, but hiring the masterminds behind The Black Parade to craft an official four-mission campaign bridging the first two games is a stroke of genius. At $29.99, the undisputed king of stealth is finally getting the royal treatment it deserves.
