Three-Week Delay, Zephyr Job, and Evolved Combat: What Final Fantasy XIV Evercold Changes on February 23, 2027

Opening the 2026 Fan Festival in Tokyo at Makuhari Messe, producer and director Naoki Yoshida made it official. Originally targeted for late January 2027, Square Enix's sixth major expansion for its flagship MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold (Patch 8.0), has been pushed back by three weeks and will officially launch on Tuesday, February 23, 2027 across PC (Windows and Steam), Mac, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Early access for players who pre-order will begin on Friday, February 19, 2027, as detailed on the official Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold promotional site.
Why Naoki Yoshida Needed Three Extra Weeks and November 4 Pre-Order Bonuses
Addressing fans live on stage in Chiba, Yoshida personally apologized for the brief shift from the studio's internal late-January target. He explained that Creative Studio III required three additional weeks of polish to ensure the expansion's sweeping combat overhaul and new zone systems meet expectations, slotting Evercold into a stacked February window on the 2027 video game release calendar.
Pre-orders for Evercold open on Wednesday, November 4, 2026 via the Mog Station and digital platform storefronts ($44.99 for the Standard Edition and $64.99 for the Digital Collector's Edition). Pre-ordering grants Early Access on February 19, 2027 alongside two immediate in-game bonuses:
- Halone's Earring: an ice-themed accessory modeled after the Fury of Eorzea that grants a +30% EXP bonus when defeating enemies up to level 100 for Disciples of War and Magic.
- Wind-up Köttr Minion: a cosmetic companion representing the new feline allied society inhabiting the Fourth reflection.
Meanwhile, the Digital Collector's Edition packs three account-wide rewards delivered at the start of early access: the Valhallar Odin Mount (inspired by the Eidolon from Final Fantasy XIII and capable of transforming into a flying mech in real time), the Entreat Crystal emote featuring Azem's crystal, and the Crystal Skyltborg weapon for the new Bastion job. A standalone physical Collector's Box ($319.99 as part of the PC/Mac Collector's Bundle on the Square Enix Store) adds a Yoshitaka Amano art box, a crafted Reaper figure, an Ethos metal keychain, a Köttr mini plush, and a Tapestry of the Fourth.

Zephyr and Bastion: Two New Jobs Built Exclusively for Evolved Mode
Alongside the release date, the full CG cinematic trailer debuted the expansion's second new job: Zephyr, a Physical Ranged DPS originating from the unforgiving mountains of northwestern Ilsabard. Armed with a rapid-fire crossbow, the Zephyr hunts in tandem with an avian hawk familiar named Nephele to harry targets from afar.
Zephyr joins the previously revealed Bastion, a Main Tank job passed down by the royal family of the northern archipelago of Aerslaent. Wielding dual hulking greatshields known as Skyltborgs, Bastions act as walking fortresses capable of deflecting heavy blows while deploying spikes and firing salvos of aetherial artillery.
As the level cap rises from 100 to 110 across all jobs and classes, Version 8.0 introduces a dual-track battle system:
- Reborn Mode: preserves the familiar combat flow based on current rotations and job mechanics.
- Evolved Mode: a freshly designed combat framework built to emphasize each job's distinct mechanical identity. Crucially, Square Enix confirmed that both the Bastion and the Zephyr can only be played using Evolved Mode.
The Fourth Reflection, Four Realmships, and Evangelion Raids in Patch 8.0
Narratively, Evercold summons the Warrior of Light to the icebound world of the Fourth reflection under the looming threat of the Solstice. Anchored by the new hub cities of Fargarth and Hjartadunur, players will chart massive skyborne vessels known as Realmships: the Realmship of Water (Naglfar), the Realmship of Fire (Hringhorni), the Realmship of Earth (Sessrymnir), and the Realmship of Wind (Skiðblaðnir). Past a certain point in the main scenario, players will be free to tackle specific areas in the order of their choosing, backed by an Auto Content Balancing system that dynamically scales field enemies and duties so friends of different levels can party together seamlessly.
Endgame and lifestyle systems are also getting a comprehensive shake-up across the 8.x patch cycle, offering plenty to look forward to after the recent Keybound Brawler chaos at the Final Fantasy XIV Gold Saucer:
- "EVANGELION - Ghosts of Desire" Alliance Raid Series: a 24-player collaboration with studio khara that splits alliance raids into more accessible first and second halves while adding Savage-style 8-player boss encounters.
- "Beyond the Lifestream" 8-Player Raid Series: supervised by Kazushige Nojima and Tetsuya Nomura, this series debuts a brand-new Fierce difficulty tier positioned directly between Normal and Savage.
- Gauntlet of Power and Quality-of-Life Overhauls: a sequential five-boss dungeon rush duty, a new Seasonal framework for gear progression, the ability to summon your Chocobo companion inside dungeons via Duty Support, account-wide first-tier mount speed unlocks, and 8.x housing upgrades allowing players to set their interior layout to Small, Medium, or Large regardless of plot size.
My Take
A three-week push from late January to February 23, 2027 is a drop in the bucket for an expansion that is fundamentally rewriting the combat blueprint established back in A Realm Reborn. What really stands out from this Tokyo keynote is the boldness of Evolved Mode and Square Enix's decision to lock both Bastion and Zephyr inside it. Over the last two expansions, homogenizing every job around a strict two-minute burst window drained away too much class identity. If Creative Studio III uses the level 110 cap, the midcore Fierce raid tier, and heavy-hitters like Beyond the Lifestream and Evangelion to break that rigid mechanical routine without alienating players who prefer Reborn Mode, those extra twenty days in the oven will pay off the moment early access servers go live on February 19.
