5-Day LAN Swiss Stage, 8 Arena Playoff Teams, and BLAST Bounty Replaced: BLAST Open 2027 Season 3 Heads to the United States

The 2027 competitive Counter-Strike 2 calendar just received a major structural shakeup in North America. Tournament organizer BLAST has officially announced that BLAST Open 2027 Season 3 will take place in the United States from September 3 to 12, 2027. Taking over the late-summer calendar slot originally reserved for a second edition of BLAST Bounty, the American tournament introduces a revamped, fully on-location LAN format.

5-Day LAN Swiss Stage and 8 Arena Playoff Teams: How the Format Changes

Since BLAST overhauled its circuit structure in 2025 and throughout the 2026 season, including Team Spirit and donk's triumph at BLAST Open Porto 2026, BLAST Open tournaments have relied on a split two-location formula. Sixteen teams typically battled through two eight-team double-elimination (GSL) groups behind closed doors at BLAST's studios in Copenhagen, with only six rosters advancing to the host city's arena for the playoffs.

All 16 teams at BLAST Open 2027 Season 3 will compete on LAN in the United States starting from the opening Swiss Play-In stage.

For the September 2027 event in the United States, BLAST is scrapping the split studio-to-arena travel model in favor of a unified two-stage LAN layout:

  • Play-In Stage (5-Day LAN Swiss Bracket): All 16 participating teams will compete on LAN in the United States across a five-day Swiss-system bracket.
  • Arena Playoffs (8 Teams Advancing): Instead of capping the arena stage at six teams (two direct semifinalists and four quarterfinalists), the top 8 teams from the Swiss stage will advance to a full playoff bracket in front of a live arena crowd.

11 Direct VRS Invites and an Extra Qualifier Slot for North America

Alongside the bracket overhaul, BLAST has adjusted how teams qualify through the Valve Regional Standings (VRS) and regional qualifiers. Whereas previous Open stops issued twelve direct VRS invitations alongside four regional qualifier spots, BLAST Open 2027 Season 3 shifts one invite slot into the qualifier pool to bolster the host region:

  • 11 Direct VRS Invites: The top eleven eligible teams on the global Valve Regional Standings at the invite cutoff will receive direct berths into the US LAN Swiss stage.
  • 5 Regional Qualifier Spots: Open and closed regional qualifiers will run across the four main competitive regions (Europe, North America, South America, and Asia). As the host region, North America receives an extra qualifying slot, sending two qualified rosters to the main event.

Converting the late-summer Bounty stop into a third BLAST Open event further expands a 2027 calendar that is already historic for international travel, with both 2027 Counter-Strike 2 Majors taking place outside Europe in Buenos Aires and Shanghai. The 2027 BLAST tour now features four $1,100,000 Open events across Asia, North America, and South America:

My Take

Ditching the split Copenhagen studio group stage for this US stop is the smartest format change BLAST has made in years. Watching ten teams get eliminated in a quiet studio thousands of miles away from the host arena always made the first week of a BLAST Open feel disconnected from the actual event. Running a full 16-team Swiss stage on LAN in the United States and putting all eight playoff teams onto the arena stage fixes both problems at once. Fans in the venue get four proper quarterfinals instead of a truncated six-team bracket, and swapping out a studio Bounty event to give North American Counter-Strike two domestic qualifier spots is a much-needed boost for the local tier-two scene.
