The Grimm Reapress and the Drearytale Monster Launches May 13, 2027 on Switch 2, PS5, Switch, and PC: Storybook Mechanics and Limited Edition Detailed

The Grimm Reapress and the Drearytale Monster Mono and Mar key art on Switch 2 PS5 and PC

Publisher NIS America and developer Nippon Ichi Software have officially announced the Western release date for The Grimm Reapress and the Drearytale Monster. Helmed by character designer and creator Sayaka Oda, the artistic mind behind The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince and The Cruel King and the Great Hero, this hand-drawn storybook adventure RPG will launch in the West on May 13, 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

The Curse of Paper Mortis and a Pact Inside the Libratarium

Set in a dark gothic fairytale world, an incurable magical illness known as Paper Mortis is spreading across the land, mutating animals into creatures called Papereapers and turning young girls into picture books known as Grimmoires before they eventually transform into monsters called Grimm Reapresses. The story follows Mono, a timid young girl born into a prestigious family of opera stars who neglect her and force her to live up in the theater's attic doing odd jobs.

The only person who ever showed Mono warmth was her older sister Enciel, a celebrated opera prodigy who secretly visited the attic to teach her how to sing and dance. When Enciel's chronic illness worsens and she contracts Paper Mortis, she is quarantined inside the Libratarium, a containment facility that has since been abandoned with all of its patients and monsters locked inside. Determined to find her sister's Grimmoire before her transformation becomes permanent, Mono enters the Libratarium and forms a contract with Mär (short for Märchendia), a legendary misanthropic monster bound in a cursed collar who harbors a deep hatred for humanity after being betrayed by a goat herder in his past.

Devouring Monochrome Worlds and Flipping Color Pages

To locate Enciel, Mono and Mär must dive directly into the pages of various Drearytales, monochrome storybook realms that manifest the psychological trauma of the girls trapped inside them. Exploration and boss battles rely on combining the duo's contrasting rules of interaction:

  • Mär's "Mulch" Power (Devouring Black-and-White): Inside any Drearytale, Mär can eat anything drawn in black-and-white. Players can command him to chomp through enemies, monochrome brambles, dead-end walls, and even suspicious monochrome dialogue boxes spoken by monsters to uncover hidden routes.
  • The Berserk Gauge: Eating too much fills Mär's Berserk Gauge. At the first threshold, he grows larger and gains attack range at the cost of finesse skills like Paper Glide. If he eats his way to maximum capacity, he transforms into an uncontrollable beast that ignores Mono's orders, devours everything in sight, and drains Mono's health down to a checkpoint reset.
  • Unlockable Monster Skills: Clearing storybooks restores Mär's sealed abilities, including Paste (spitting eaten material to strike distant foes or repair broken floors), Book Burn (breathing fire to clear cobwebs and light torches at the cost of collected paper Scraps), and Paper Glide (lifting Mono into the air to glide across chasms and hazardous pools of vivid paint).
  • Mono's "Flip" and "Retouch" Abilities (Interacting with Color): While Mär cannot bite colored objects, Mono can manipulate them. Her Flip ability lets her peel back protruding corners of background pages to reveal secret pathways or hide behind paper trees when invincible giant monsters patrol the stage. Her Retouch skill cleans up distorted wall sketches to turn messy drawings into functional doors.

Tragic Heroines and the Denizens of the Libratarium

Throughout each Drearytale, players gather memory fragments called Memomarks, narrated by the afflicted girls over Sayaka Oda's hand-drawn illustrations. Understanding a girl's past allows Mono to reach her heart during the culminating boss battle and restore vivid color to her world. NIS America highlighted four major Grimm Reapresses awaiting inside the books: the Sheepish Wolfess in The Forest of Sheep (a devoted shepherdess whose younger sister vanished among man-eating wolves), the Patchwork Puppetess in The Patchwork Village (a girl with albinism ostracized in a remote village), the Fluttering Heiress in The Cloudweb Kingdom (a red-haired third princess locked inside a ruined castle tower), and the Scrawly Paintress in The Unfinished Canvas (a court jester painter driven to madness after losing her fame).

Back in the Libratarium hub, Mono is assisted by her self-proclaimed avian butler Birdler and several friendly Papereapers who trade services for Scraps. Players can visit Rad Hatter to unlock wearable hats and accessories for Mono, consult the owl-like Owlin for map stamps and stage hints, or pay Voiscat to fill out the Reaperpedia with enemy weaknesses and culinary flavor notes.

My Perspective

It only takes a single glance at the crosshatched ink work to recognize Sayaka Oda's signature touch. Ever since The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince, her team at Nippon Ichi Software has excelled at weaving grim, emotional fables that look like living storybooks, even if the actual platforming in past entries sometimes played it safe. What excites me most about The Grimm Reapress and the Drearytale Monster is how directly the art style drives the puzzle design. Letting Mär physically chew through black-and-white terrain and even eat enemy dialogue boxes while Mono peels back colored page corners is a brilliant mechanical hook, and the risk-reward tension of the Berserk Gauge should keep encounters lively when the book opens on May 13, 2027.
