Mortal Chickens, Frozen Mines, and Zero Sprinklers: How Grave Seasons Turns Cozy Farming Into a Murder Mystery

Grave Seasons gameplay in Ashenridge murder mystery farming sim by Perfect Garbage and Blumhouse Games

Settling down on a quiet mountain farm after breaking out of prison sounded like the perfect fresh start, right up until the neighbors started turning up in pieces. Scheduled to launch on March 9, 2027 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, Grave Seasons just revealed ten new minutes of developer-led gameplay featuring Son M. (co-founder and creative director at Perfect Garbage), Emmett Nahil (co-founder and narrative director), and Louise Blain (creative director at publisher Blumhouse Games). Far from slapping a spooky coat of paint onto a standard agricultural loop, the team detailed how every management mechanic is built to fuel paranoia inside the isolated town of Ashenridge.

One Year to Survive and Zero Farm Automation

In most traditional farming simulators, time is always on the player's side: if you miss a seasonal crop in year one, you simply plant it next spring while rows of automated sprinklers and processing machines eventually run the homestead for you. Perfect Garbage deliberately threw that playbook out the window. In Grave Seasons, you have strictly one single year across four seasons to uncover the town's dark history and stop the supernatural serial killer stalking the community.

Son M. and Emmett Nahil explained that the studio intentionally stripped out self-sustaining farm optimization. Processing goods inside your shed or cooking in the kitchen revolves around more than 600 hand-authored items with fixed crafting timers that force tough daily sacrifices. Every crop grown in your mountain soil, every fish pulled from the docks, and every herb gathered near Sylvia's apothecary or Daniela's seed shop serves a dual purpose: earning gold to stay afloat, and crafting occult ward items or completing urgent quests to figure out who the murderer is targeting next.

Meet the "Chorbs": Why Your Chickens Can Die or Attract the Supernatural

The ten-minute showcase also pulled back the curtain on two previously unseen gameplay pillars: livestock care and underground mining. On the animal husbandry side, the developers introduced their comically round chickens, affectionately nicknamed "Chorbs" by the team. Behind their adorable pixel-art silhouettes lies a ruthless rule: while forgetting to feed animals in classic farming sims merely pauses egg production, livestock in Grave Seasons can permanently die.

Your animals can perish through accidental neglect if you spend too much time chasing murder leads in town, through intentional player neglect, or more ominously, because the supernatural entity lurking in Ashenridge takes a direct interest in specific animals on your farm. Standing at the complete opposite end of the spectrum from Fangtopia, the scare-free Halloween cozy puzzle game, Perfect Garbage uses your emotional attachment to cute farm animals to make every daily chore carry life-or-death weight.

Multi-Biome Mines and a Randomly Selected Killer Among Your Romances

The second major reveal took players deep into the Mines of Ashenridge, one of the world's seven main districts alongside your farm, the mountainside, the forest, the local and commercial districts, and the coast. Built with semi-randomized layers spanning distinct underground biomes, including frozen ice caverns, the mines demand strict stamina and inventory management. Narrative director Emmett Nahil noted that he routinely packs 50 copies of a single consumable item just to survive extended mining runs, where swinging your pickaxe uncovers both crafting ores and unsettling secrets buried beneath the town.

Back on the surface, players can stay awake for over 24 hours to prowl the streets at night and break and enter into more than 70 interior locations to snoop through neighbors' homes without getting caught. Replayability is driven by a procedural twist: every playthrough randomly selects the supernatural killer from a pool of candidates among the town's 30+ residents, complete with a unique campaign, motive, and kill style. Since several potential culprits are among the 12 romanceable characters, you can easily end up dating the murderer when the game arrives on the 2027 video game release calendar.

My Take

After watering thousands of turnips under sunny skies in Stardew Valley and Story of Seasons, the cozy farming formula has felt a little too safe for years. Being able to hand a bouquet of flowers to the sweetest neighbor in town at noon, pick the lock to their basement at midnight to find the baker's remains, and wake up wondering if a demon targeted your chickens overnight finally gives the genre some real teeth. Better yet, ditching automated sprinklers is a masterstroke: when every hour spent crafting an occult charm in your shed is an hour you aren't watching the killer's next victim, daily time management turns into genuine survival horror.
