Just 7 Months After Global Launch: Ubisoft Shuts Down Rainbow Six Mobile and Cuts In-App Purchases

The handheld ambition of one of competitive gaming's most demanding tactical shooters is coming to an abrupt end. Barely eight months after its full global launch in February 2026, Ubisoft has officially announced the permanent sunset of Rainbow Six Mobile.

The development team shared the confirmation directly through the game's official communication channels. The economic reality behind the free-to-play shooter has forced an uncommonly swift decision.

Effective immediately, in-app purchases with real-world currency have been disabled, and the title is being phased out from digital storefronts on iOS and Android. Multiplayer servers will stay active until January 15, 2027, giving the community a few remaining months to play.

To support players through this transition period, the studio is honoring its immediate roadmap commitments. The upcoming seasonal update will launch as scheduled next week, delivering the game's final wave of competitive content.

This shutdown marks a sobering outcome for a project that spent over four years in development. First revealed in 2022, the game completed multiple closed betas throughout 2023 and 2024, followed by a regional rollout in Latin America before reaching worldwide availability.

Community feedback across app stores and forums consistently pointed to friction points in the mobile adaptation. Players frequently cited uneven spawn points compared to the core tactical experience, alongside a heavy monetization structure that locked key operators behind extensive grind or paywalls.

The cancellation reinforces a troubling pattern across Ubisoft's broader live-service portfolio. Following the shutdown of XDefiant and severe backlash surrounding the PC release of The Division Resurgence, the French publisher continues to struggle with adapting its flagship console franchises into sustainable mobile revenue drivers.

While the company focuses on safeguarding its loyal PC and console base through Ubisoft's commitment to Rainbow Six Siege, the dream of building a mobile esports pillar has vanished. Development resources are now being shifted to other long-term studio priorities.

For those tracking live-service titles on the 2027 game release calendar, January 15 marks the final extraction for Rainbow Six Mobile.
