108 Cursed Swords and No Level Scaling: How Muramasa Revenant Blades Overhauls Combat for Its PC Debut

Vanillaware is finally tearing down its longest-standing wall. After more than two decades of console exclusivity, the celebrated Japanese developer is bringing its first-ever title to PC with Muramasa: Revenant Blades. Seventeen years after the iconic 2D hack-and-slash debuted on the Nintendo Wii in 2009, this definitive edition arrives on Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 4, 2027.

Rather than rolling out a standard visual remaster, Vanillaware is executing a massive mechanical overhaul under director Wataru Nakanishi. Japanese folklore has long held that blades forged by master Muramasa carried an insatiable curse, demanding a taste of human blood whenever unsheathed. The studio turned that superstition into a core gameplay mechanic. All 108 swords feature distinct martial skills, but players can only transfer an ability to another weapon after feeding it enough enemy blood on the battlefield.

That design shift solves the single biggest flaw of the original Wii and PlayStation Vita versions. Previously, each katana was permanently locked to a single technique. In practice, players quickly abandoned 90% of the game's armory to favor two or three high-damage late-game swords. Revenant Blades dismantles those restrictions by completely uncoupling skills from individual blades. Swordsmen can now configure three ground moves and three aerial strikes across a primary trio of hot-swapped weapons.

The resulting flow dramatically elevates combat pacing. Juggling a pack of enemy ninjas into the sky with an explosive Flame Barrage, swapping katanas mid-air, and driving them into the dirt with Celestial Slash creates relentless offensive chains. That speed is vital against ramped-up enemy density. Foes arrive in massive mobs, and blocking blindly will quickly deplete weapon durability until the blade shatters, leaving fighters completely defenseless.

Exploration also undergoes a fundamental change with the complete removal of level scaling. The original release dynamically adjusted enemy stats to match character progression. In Revenant Blades, every region across feudal Japan features static level thresholds. Backtracking to introductory routes lets you slice through patrols effortlessly, but wandering off the beaten path into high-threat territory puts you against brutal encounters, like poisonous swamp toads that can wipe out an unprepared wanderer in seconds.

Visually, the project required an enormous manual undertaking. Because several raw assets from the 2009 release were no longer accessible, Vanillaware artists extracted sprites directly from legacy code and hand-painted every asset to ensure flawless 4K presentation. The package includes both base campaigns starring Momohime and Kisuke alongside all four Genroku Legends DLC expansions, rounded out by brand-new full English voice acting alongside original Japanese audio.

Already positioned as a highlight on the 2027 video game release calendar, this Steam debut carries massive implications. Director Wataru Nakanishi hinted that strong PC reception on Steam (where the store page is live for wishlisting) could finally open the door for Vanillaware to port the rest of its prestigious catalog to desktop hardware.
