Mesa 26.2.6 for Linux Fixes KytyPS5 Emulator Bug on AMD Radeon RX 6000 to RX 9000 GPUs, Plus The Witcher 3 and RPCS3

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX GPU Linux Mesa 26.2.6 RADV driver KytyPS5 emulator

The sixth maintenance point release of the quarterly Mesa 26.2 graphics driver stack has officially landed for Linux and SteamOS systems. Published by release manager Eric Engestrom, Mesa 26.2.6 focuses purely on driver stability across Vulkan 1.4, OpenGL 4.6, and OpenCL 3.1 implementations. Leading the changelog is a crucial fix in the ACO shader compiler that resolves a regression affecting the KytyPS5 PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 emulator across modern AMD Radeon graphics cards.

ACO Shader Compiler Regression Fixed for KytyPS5 Across RDNA 2 to RDNA 4 GPUs

During the Mesa 26.2 development cycle, commit 984aa6e0855 inadvertently introduced an instruction scheduling bug inside the Valve-backed ACO compiler used by the open-source RADV Vulkan driver. Specifically, when a low-level s_bitset0 instruction was retargeted to the exec execution mask register, the post-register-allocation optimizer (aco/opt_postRA) dropped the required VCC (Vector Condition Code) condition.

In practice, dropping the VCC condition broke branching logic across three generations of AMD graphics architectures: RDNA 2 (Radeon RX 6000 series and the Steam Deck APU), RDNA 3 (Radeon RX 7000 series), and RDNA 4 (Radeon RX 9000 series). The bug surfaced prominently when running Kyty (specifically its KytyPS5 configuration), the open-source C++ emulator that translates Sony console system and graphics calls into Vulkan routines. Just as hardware enthusiasts have recently shown how Bazzite Linux can turn a retail PS5 and 40 of its GPU CUs into a working Steam Machine, developer Rhys Perry has now patched ACO's branching sequence optimizer (checking for tied definitions in try_optimize_branching_sequence) so Linux desktops can emulate PS5 workloads accurately again.

Radeon RX 6800 XT GPULostDevice Crash Fixed Alongside RADV Ray Tracing Improvements

Beyond the KytyPS5 fix, the RADV team resolved several high-priority stability tickets for AMD Radeon owners in Mesa 26.2.6. Chief among them is a fix for a persistent GPULostDevice crash on the Radeon RX 6800 XT that originally traced back to the Mesa 26.0.x series. Valve developer Samuel Pitoiset also contributed six targeted RADV patches: fixing the VMA heap size for the descriptor set allocator, plugging a memory leak and error code bug when pool entry allocation fails, correcting RSRC2 register emission for vertex prologs, and resolving a ray tracing bug (radv/rt) that overwrote stack sizes during partial cache hits.

Older Radeon architectures also benefit from this maintenance cycle: Georg Lehmann enabled FP16 support on GFX8 (Polaris) GPUs specifically for vkd3d-proton in DirectX 12 titles, complementing wider ecosystem efforts where AMD brings FSR 4.1 to Radeon RX 6000 GPUs via INT8 compute and the Vulkan API. Meanwhile, Oliver Clarke disabled 8x MSAA for Variable Rate Shading (VRS) in RADV device properties to prevent rendering corruption.

The Witcher 3 Remastered, RPCS3 on RTX 5090 Under WSL2, and Intel Meteor Lake

The rest of the Mesa 26.2.6 release notes deliver targeted fixes across NVIDIA, Intel, and Qualcomm Snapdragon hardware:

  • The Witcher 3 Remastered (Next-Gen): Resolved a visual corruption bug that produced an unwanted overlay-like artifact across the screen.
  • RPCS3 PS3 Emulator on WSL2 (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 / D3D12): Microsoft engineer Jesse Natalie eliminated a self-deadlock inside d3d12_bo_new(). Reclaiming buffer memory while holding the pb_slab manager mutex previously caused RPCS3 to freeze during compressed texture uploads on an RTX 5090 running under WSL2's D3D12 translation layer.
  • Intel Meteor Lake and ANV Vulkan Driver: Fixed GPU hangs triggered by the Unigine Heaven and Unigine Valley benchmarks on Mesa 26.2.0 through 26.2.4, alongside a patch from Lionel Landwerlin fixing an assertion failure on vkGetPhysicalDeviceImageFormatProperties2 in the Intel ANV driver.
  • Zink, Turnip (Adreno A650), and Snapdragon X1 Elite: Mike Blumenkrantz landed 40 commits for Zink (OpenGL-on-Vulkan), overhauling swapchain readback handling and bindless descriptors. On the ARM side, the Turnip Vulkan driver fixes game hangs on Adreno A650 GPUs caused by a missing shader workaround, while Freedreno resolves garbled text rendering in pdf.js on Snapdragon X1 Elite laptops.

My Take on the Spec Sheet

Looking through the commit log for Mesa 26.2.6, what stands out most on my test bench is how quickly the RADV and ACO maintainers track down low-level shader regressions affecting experimental console emulators. On Windows, a proprietary driver regression that drops a condition code register in a niche workload like KytyPS5 or RPCS3 can easily sit in a bug tracker for months unless a major AAA release triggers the exact same instruction path. In the open-source Mesa stack, engineers pinpointed the exact s_bitset0 to exec optimization flaw and backported the fix straight into the stable 26.2 branch within days. If you run gaming distributions like Bazzite, Nobara, Fedora, or Arch Linux on an AMD Radeon RX 6000, RX 7000, or RX 9000 card, updating to Mesa 26.2.6 is an easy recommendation as soon as it hits your package repositories. We have not yet had a physical unit on our desk,if the manufacturer's team would like to send over a review sample so we can put it through our full real-world testing protocol, our lab doors are wide open.
