Mina the Hollower Tops 500,000 Sales and Saves Yacht Club Games as the Shovel Knight Creators Pivot to a New 3D Game

Mina the Hollower Yacht Club Games financial stability and new 3D game

Long described internally as a make-or-break gamble for the future of Yacht Club Games, Mina the Hollower has officially delivered the lifeline its creators needed. During an official Reddit AMA session, the developers behind Shovel Knight shared a candid update on the independent studio's financial recovery while confirming that the vast majority of the team has now pivoted to developing a brand-new 3D game.

Over 500,000 Copies Sold: How Mina the Hollower Bought Yacht Club Games Crucial Time

Ahead of the 8-bit gothic action-adventure game's launch in late May 2026 across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2, pressure was mounting inside Yacht Club Games. Weighed down by pandemic-era delays and a costly attempt to transform into a multi-project studio, founder and studio director Sean Velasco had openly described Mina the Hollower as a make-or-break moment for the company.

Five months after launching at an approachable $19.99 price point, that bet has paid off. Having surpassed 500,000 copies sold within its first two weeks on the market, the title is steadily marching toward the studio's one-million-unit target and has cemented its place among the best games to play on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Asked during the Reddit AMA whether Mina the Hollower managed to secure financial stability for the company, Sean Velasco answered bluntly: "Yes... for now!"

Why Splitting the Studio in Two Was a Mistake

Beyond the sales milestone, the development cycle forced Yacht Club Games to rethink how it operates. For years, the studio had split its staff into two separate teams to work simultaneously on Mina the Hollower and an unannounced second project, before ultimately pulling everyone onto Mina to get the game across the finish line.

Co-founder and artist Nick Wozniak reflected openly on why dividing the team proved unsustainable: "Sales are the things that keep the company afloat so it's not born from greed (mostly) that we say we'd love to see more sales, it's all about continuing to work together and make great games and reaping the rewards along the way. We are doing ok and learned a lot this cycle. I think we learned mostly that keeping the team tight and focused is what helped Mina land. Splitting the team up to work on two games was something we could have corrected a long time ago but I'm glad to be where we are now. Just gotta pocket those lessons and use them to drive you forward."

Most of Yacht Club Games Is Now Working on a New 3D Game

With Mina the Hollower stabilizing the studio's finances, Yacht Club Games has returned its unified workforce to the second project that was temporarily shelved. Prior to Mina's release, Sean Velasco had disclosed to Bloomberg that an unannounced 3D Shovel Knight game was roughly halfway finished before the studio paused it to go all-in on finishing Mina.

When asked by a fan about the status of that three-dimensional project during the AMA, co-founder and lead programmer Alec Faulkner stopped short of officially naming Shovel Knight 3D, but confirmed that full production is underway: "Most of us are currently working on a 3D game, yes! Not sayin more! Other than that it's gonna be soooooooo awesome." With the project already halfway built prior to the pause, fans will be keeping a close eye on the 2027 video game release calendar for a first official reveal.

Expanded Randomizer, Boss Randomization, and Speedrunner Updates Coming to Mina

Even with the bulk of the studio focused on its 3D project, Yacht Club Games is not leaving Mina the Hollower behind. While the developers noted they are not currently ready to discuss massive expansions or spin-offs on the scale of what Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove received over the years, a dedicated group is actively building new post-launch features.

According to the team, upcoming updates for Mina the Hollower will include:

  • Expanded randomizer options to shuffle items and progression routes across playthroughs.
  • Enemy and boss randomization to keep dungeon encounters fresh and unpredictable.
  • Additional gameplay modifiers offering new ways to customize the challenge.
  • Dedicated speedrunner features designed to streamline competitive runs and routing.

My Take

Hearing Sean Velasco and Nick Wozniak speak so candidly about how close Yacht Club Games came to the edge is a sobering reminder of how fragile indie game development remains in 2026, even for a studio with a household name like Shovel Knight. Recognizing that splitting the team across two projects was a mistake, and recommitting to a single, tightly focused group,is the smartest takeaway they could have had. Knowing that their unified crew is now pouring all of its energy into a 3D project that was already halfway completed makes me genuinely excited to see what they unveil next.
