GTA 6: "Not Even the Devs Have Seen Everything", Rockstar North Boss Reveals to IGN

The anticipation surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI has reached another gear. In a massive exclusive interview published by IGN, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson offered an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look into the creation of the most anticipated video game in history. His revelations describe an open world so gigantic, dense, and interconnected that even the developers building it continue to be surprised during gameplay sessions.
An unpredictable open world where developers have not seen it all
Rob Nelson was remarkably blunt when speaking to IGN: "The game is so big, I don't know that there's anybody on the team that knows all of it. There's so much stuff, so much dialogue that's regularly hitting the build on an ongoing basis."
That level of scale is not merely marketing bravado; it represents day-to-day reality inside the studio. During a recent playtest, while driving Jason to rob a local convenience store, Nelson was startled when his protagonist called out an impound lot as they passed by, suggesting a completely different crime on the fly. It was a dynamic line of dialogue and an emergent opportunity that the studio head had never encountered in development builds before. Just like Red Dead Redemption 2, the mainline story missions will only scratch the surface of what the State of Leonida holds.

Jason and Lucia: tackling adult intimacy without cheap shock value
When asked by IGN about the criminal partnership and romantic bond connecting Jason and Lucia, Rob Nelson tackled physical intimacy head-on, an area where video games have historically struggled. While GTA 6 holds an adult rating (ESRB M / PEGI 18), Rockstar has no interest in chasing cheap controversy or resurrecting clunky minigames reminiscent of San Andreas' infamous Hot Coffee.
"These characters feel very right together, they really do," Nelson told IGN. "For anybody that wants to play around with the idea of role-playing their relationship, it's amazing. But physical intimacy is a huge part of a relationship, and so it has to be done right. Like anything that we do, we have to iterate and try things until we figure out what feels right." That dedication to character depth reflects Rockstar's drive to create authentic, grounded drama within an ecosystem that rivals Red Dead 2's living wildlife.
Red Dead 2 DNA without the sluggish controls
The exclusive sit-down with IGN also shed light on gameplay feel. While GTA 6 inherits Red Dead Redemption 2's staggering attention to detail, from hostile swamp wildlife to dynamic tropical storms and reactive pedestrians, Rockstar listened closely to mechanical feedback. Moving away from frantic button-mashing sprints and streamlining character transitions ensures that immersive simulation never clashes with responsive arcade thrills.
Despite persistent online speculation regarding a day-one PC launch, Rockstar North remains committed to its proven playbook. The developers are channeling every ounce of hardware muscle into PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S to deliver a benchmark launch before turning their sights elsewhere. Vice City is built to dominate without compromise.
